"It definitely won't get any worse" About Donald Trump's position on Ukraine.

26 August 2025

"They don't like each other," Donald Trump explained why Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy refuse to meet in person. The US President hopes that the leaders of Russia and Ukraine will eventually hold a summit, possibly with his participation. He also did not rule out the resumption of negotiations with Moscow on nuclear disarmament. According to him, China will probably be involved in this dialogue.

Donald Trump said that Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy have personal hostility towards each other, so it is very difficult to organize their meeting, but sooner or later it must happen. The US President made it clear that peace does not depend on mediators, but on the desire of the participants in the confrontation to reach an agreement, and he intends to push them to do so. If this does not happen, then there may be consequences. By the way, a week has passed out of the two weeks allotted by the head of the White House to find the very necessary solution. So, in theory, there is not much time to warm up and overcome personal hostility.

Despite the seemingly extravagant nature of these statements, the conclusion is very simple - the peace process is at a dead end, and it is not yet clear what to do about it. I would also like to separately highlight Trump's explanation that the main issue of Ukraine's security guarantees has not been resolved. Many beautiful words have been said on this topic, but, as usual, there are few real actions. By and large, this part is also at a dead end. What is currently being talked about categorically does not suit Moscow for the simple reason that Kyiv is asking the West to physically protect it from Russia. Another paper memorandum is not suitable for this. We can either talk about foreign contingents directly on Ukrainian territory, or about an analogue of Article 5 of the NATO Charter, that is, about providing immediate assistance to an ally who has faced aggression from outside. The difference with direct membership in the alliance is that assistance may not necessarily imply sending Western troops. Perhaps it will be limited to weapons, intelligence, finances, etc. Again, there are no specifics on this matter. Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that this week he will begin relevant consultations with the American side. As is known, he also continues to insist on a personal meeting with his Russian counterpart, but he is extremely pessimistic, which he does not hide. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian information space is currently actively discussing the topic of threats to Zelenskyy if he makes territorial concessions. Let's leave this without comment. It is only important to recall that this formula is currently being heard: territories in exchange for security guarantees. It is easy to guess that this peaceful scenario is also falling apart before our eyes. There is another idea - to start saving the planet from a nuclear winter, and leave Ukraine out of the equation. This means that the United States, Russia and China are starting negotiations on global disarmament. This is an option to go from more to less: first save the world, and then discuss the current conflict. Actually, why not? As they say in such cases, it certainly won't get any worse.
